A Beautiful Day to be Accredited in Glamour Photography

One of my goals as a photographer is to constantly push myself forward, continually learning in an effort to create better photographs. By pushing myself to look a little closer at the details, improve my technique and develop new perspectives, I can (hopefully)  provide new, fresh imagery without settling into a photographic ‘status quo’. The Professional Photographers of Canada’s accreditation program allows me to do just that. Once or twice a year, I submit a new set of my images to a panel of expert judges for review to assess my ability to capture a specific photographic specialisation. This time around, I submitted for Glamour. As the PPOC website defines it:

Glamour photography is a personal portrait commissioned to capture the beauty that lies within all men and women. Your glamour images should create an air of fantasy, sensitivity, and personal expression to display to these ordinary men and women that they too can resemble the models they see in today’s modern media. Attention should be given to hair, make-up, wardrobe and sets.

Happy me when I open my email to see that I’ve now successfully achieved my 8th accreditation (hence, my not-so-subtle reference to U2’s “Beautiful Day”). 🙂

On a side note, I’d like to address the notion of beauty or ‘being beautiful’. While we all know that “beauty is only skin deep” and it’s far more important to be a beautiful person than simply a person of beauty, there isn’t a single one of us that doesn’t appreciate feeling beautiful (or handsome, as the case may be). However, there’s so much marketing pressure these days to be beautiful and successful while, at the same time, an equal amount of peer pressure to be happy with who you are and focus of your inner beauty. It’s a societal tug-of-war with our self esteem. The glamour portrait is a memento, a single moment in time, that allows a person to simply be beautiful, guilt free. Enjoy the experience – we all deserve to feel glamourous.

In assessing Accreditation Submissions, the judges will consider the following criteria: Impact, Creativity, Style, Composition, Presentation, Colour Balance, Centre of Interest, Lighting, Subject Matter, Image file quality, Technique and Story Telling.

Along with other service and print merits, a minimum of one Accreditation is required to qualify for a Craftsman of Photographic Arts and two accreditations are needed for a Master of Photographic Arts.
